Against seasonal work plan
I AM disappointed with the Government’s decision to engage Papua
New Guineans to work in Australia and Canada as seasonal workers.
As a Papua New Guinean, I cannot understand why the Government
cannot develop our own agricultural potential into a commercially
viable and vital project, employing our own people and boosting
our economy in the process. Why should we work for other people
when we fail to work for ourselves? The idea of going to work in
Australia or Canada is no different from the slave trade, as I see
it. It does not guarantee any economic benefit for PNG. And if we
were to work as seasonal workers, PNG would only boost the
economies of other countries by providing cheap labour, and our
status in the international community would be compromised. We are
also trailing in the industrial sector and something must be done
to boost this sector and turn PNG into a leading industrial
economy in the Pacific. We must think globally and do locally. —

Go for original products
I REFER to the letter “Beware of Asian food products” (The
National, July 9). The reason these food products are allowed to
come into the country is due to the weak control by Government
officers. Another reason is the people who are supposed to ensure
such products do not enter our shores are unable to monitor these
activities due to lack of funding from the Government. The
Independent Consumer and Competition Commission cannot do much as
it needs to be properly supported to do this and set up an
extensive network to gather information and ensure compliance with
appropriate government regulations. It is also best not to buy
products whose labels or contents are not in English or Pidgin or
that they are cheaper than others. Remember that quality items
will always be costly but at least you are assured that they are
original products. — Wakhen Makan, Lae
Prosecute gun offenders
THE security forces, especially the officers who acted swiftly to
confiscate the high-powered machine-gun from a public servant in
Kundiawa has to be commended. Please ensure that the culprits are
brought to justice. – Makan Nem, Kundiawa
Call again, Amy!
Last week, a lady by the name of Amy tried to get in touch with me
and left the mobile number 6949066. Unfortunately the number that
Amy left is a wrong number. So if Amy is reading this, please call
Rebecca on 3012085 or myself 3012061 and leave the correct number.

Can we make an accurate roll?
I REFER to the article ‘TI PNG questions updated electoral roll’
(The National, July 9). Can we have an accurate electoral roll?
Yes we can. The general idea is simply to allow village
councillors of every ward to update and submit the list probably
every quarterly. The councillors must also do this under certain
conditions such as if caught producing a false list, he or she
will be prosecuted immediately with heavy penalty. The law should
also protect him or her, if there is any inference over his or her
work by any person. I think with such strong mechanism, PNG can
come up with accurate updated electoral roll. – Concerned

Annoyed over attack on Wingti
AS a Western Highlander, I was annoyed to read about the attack on
Paias Wingti last week. The people who attacked Wingti must be
blind. I cannot understand why he was attacked as Western
Highlands is better off compared with other Highlands provinces. —

Telikom service poor
TELIKOM’S service is poor. Yet the people have to pay through
their nose for non-existent services. It has been ripping the
simple people off all this while. I am glad that Digicel has taken
a bold move to invest in this country by providing us an alternate
option. – TLS Kupa, Via email
Comment unfounded
I REFER to the letter
‘Appeal to SDAs’ (The National, July 3). My dear Pentecostal
brother, you have not been wise to make such an unfounded comment.
I appeal to you to study your bible carefully from Genesis to
Revelation so that you will know why your fellow Seventh-Day
Adventist brothers and sisters want to keep Sabbath holy.
Observance of Sabbath is according to Scriptures. So it’s not a
man-made day of worship. If you want to know more about
Seventh-Day Adventist, do not hesitate to contact our SDA church
president Pastor Thomas Daval at 4721676. — Concerned observer,
