Only 58 UoG students voted

By JAMES KILA
ONLY 58 out of 1,600 students at the University of Goroka (UoG) were able to cast their votes when polling commenced in Eastern Highlands province yesterday.
The rest missed out because their names were not registered on the common roll.
President of the newly formed Tertiary Students Association for Good Governance and Leadership Ronny Angu, who is also a student at UoG described the situation as “very sad”.
Mr Angu, one of the 58 who voted, blamed the PNG Electoral Commission for its failure to update the common-roll at UoG.
“It is very sad and unfair for such a major educational institution in the country to experience such a major mishap,” he said.
Many UoG students, who turned up at the polling venue at North Goroka Primary School, were turned away after finding their names not on the roll.
Meanwhile, polling in the Goroka town area commenced peacefully yesterday with all the polling places having people lined up in orderly manner to cast their votes.
Justice Minister and Goroka Open MP Bire Kimisopa and his wife and resident judge Justice Elenas Batari were among those who votes.
