Polling to end before the weekend

POLLING throughout the country is expected to wind down before the weekend with counting to start immediately, Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen said yesterday.
Mr Trawen in his election update press briefing said polling in the Highlands went according to plans with minor incidents that were addressed and resolved.
He said in Enga, 73 of the 78 boxes for Kandep had been returned to Wabag for counting, 63 of 78 boxes for Kompiam-Ambum had been returned and the rest yet to come by helicopter to Wabag.
He said one killing was reported and dealt by police but cannot confirm if it was election related.
For Lagaip-Porgera, polling has been completed in Lagaip and boxes for four remote locations in Porgera are yet to be airlifted there with 100 of 110 boxes for Porgera now at Porgera police station.
He said roadblock and counting venue demand at Laiagam was still being negotiated.
Mr Trawen said for Wabag Open, 55 of 66 boxes were in Wabag with nine boxes yet to come from Maramuni.
He said for Wapenamanda open, all 60 boxes were returned for counting.
“Polling in Enga was very good, except for Kandep and Kompiam-Ambum where minor election and security issues were being addressed.”
Mr Trawen said in Eastern Highlands, all polling teams with road access had been dispatched, except for Kainantu team 12 to Kamano No. 2 which was delayed due to the blowing up of a bridge in the area.
He said he was awaiting police report on the situation.
He said reports of Lae and Port Moresby residents flooding into EHP for polling was being checked.
He said Lufa and Okapa teams started moving out to polling sites on Monday while others are awaiting helicopter transport, including security personnel.
Mr Trawen said in the New Guinea Islands, polling went smoothly and orderly in Bougainville.
He said weather and transport were the major problems delaying polling in the outer atolls.
In New Ireland province, polling had been completed and counting will start on Saturday.
He said Manus was all set for counting to start this afternoon at 6 o’clock and in East New Britain, all teams had returned to the respective venues for counting to start today.
