Man who threatened polling team shot by cops

By SHEILA LASIBORI

A TEAM of polling officials is safe but a villager in the Ioma district of Oro province is in hospital in Popondetta after he reportedly failed to surrender his arms, which he allegedly used to threaten the team last Thursday.
The man, believed to be a leader of a cult movement, was shot by police officers on both of legs after he reportedly ignored warning shots fired by a section of the NCD-based police mobile squad currently on deployment in the province.
Oro provincial police commander Chief Inspector Buafe Hugo confirmed the incident saying the man (named), from Tabara village, was hospitalised for bullet wounds and would be charged later by police for tempering with ballot boxes, after he recovers.
Meanwhile, polling in remote parts of Oro province is continuing after bad weather denied access to the areas by helicopters and planes.
Provincial election manager Kila Egaba said these areas were expected to have been completed yesterday and today, while polling in Popondetta and nearby areas had been completed awaiting the districts.
Counting for Oro regional, Sohe and Ijivitari is expected to start this weekend at the Popondetta Secondary School hall.
