Power blackout hampers Lae Open vote review

By HAIVETA KIVIA
A POWER blackout hit Lae yesterday, stalling progress in the counting of the Lae Open votes.
Primary vote count has already been completed for the electorate but a review of these ballots was underway yesterday when the blackout hit.
Returning officer Roy Kamen postponed the review due to the blackout experienced in some parts of the Lae city including the counting centre at Sir Ignatius Kilagi Stadium.
He instructed counting officials to return today to resume the review and wait for the counting of the Lae Regional ballot boxes.
Once the counting for the Regional ballot boxes from Lae Open is complete, they would begin the elimination process.
An officer from PNG Power Limited’s office in Lae said the blackout was caused by technical problems affecting their Taraka sub-station.
He said this had cause problems along the power lines running into town area and PNG Power linesmen were fixing it.
Meanwhile, a man believed to be from the Highlands was arrested by police at the vicinity of the counting centre in Lae yesterday.
He was arrested for allegedly being in possession of a metre-long bush knife.
The man had tucked the knife into his trousers and covered it with his shirt but the handle of the knife stuck out and was noticed by police.
He is in police custody.
