Success at last after raid number 11

Sports

It took them 11 competition matches to finally settle for a win this season and they did it in style as Mac49 Raiders defeated Maritime Vikings 14-5 last Saturday in Madang’s Cassel Agencies rugby union competition.
The boys from Kina Beach had a sniff of victory the previous weekend against Kalibobo Gunners going down 7-13 at the end earning them a bonus point.
But a revitalised side who lined up against the student sailors was what was needed to collect the much needed competition points.
Original Raiders Robert Galedea, Collin Selve, Herman Kilawe and Darryl Abin combined well to ensure they had the victory in their hand.
New faces in Walter Bernard and Michael Kundi were strong in both attack and defence to send the Marine boys packing. Bernard and Douglas Kata scored their tries and ‘lapun’ Galedea’s boot was spot on.
Vikings were their worst enemies as after scoring the first try they fell away with numerous unforced errors to allow Raiders back in the game.
Despite having Albert Kaupa and skipper Penias Vui, they still struggled.
Raiders missed skipper Solok Apa who was nursing a leg injury.
Reigning champions 6B Pirates were held scoreless for consecutive weekend after going down to title contenders Esi Cruzers 5-0 and the MHK Hurricanes continued their recent top form to thrash Gunners 25-5 with number 8 Felix Gabriel causing havoc with ball in hand.
The ladder after week 12 sees Cruzers lead on 40 points followed by Pirates and Hurricanes 35, Gunners 30, Vikings 20 and Raiders on five points.
