TRUST us to re-gather the Column One reins on such an inauspicious morning. Friday the 13th indeed!

We were neither flitting around the capital’s high spots nor even the low spots, as implied on Tuesday by En Ada Nesenolis, one of a brood of young protégés we are encouraging to be on hand when we are Not Available.

IT was true, however, that Lurch sat gleaming in the sun beside our shanty. Inside we lay convinced that death was imminent, tossing and turning on our sweat-soaked sleeping mat, the punka swinging low. It was allegedly influenza, but that benign title creates no impression of the full-scale plague inflicted upon your columnist.

OUR quack told us that it was a particularly virulent strain from north of the border and we would likely battle it for some days. That’s what we love about doctors – their unfailing sense of graveyard humour. But enough – there’s nothing more boring than other people’s ailments.

TWO entertainment birthdays that will mean something to older readers: Miss Lena Horne celebrated her 90th birthday two weeks ago. The legendary pops and jazz singer and her husband, bandleader Lennie Hayton, had a world-wide reputation for smooth readings of contemporary classics – and quite a few highly rhythmic jazz arrangements. Think Stormy Weather, That Old Black Magic and Old Devil Moon.

THE second event? Dame Shirley Bassey turned 70 in January – but don’t imagine that made any difference to the lady with the extravagantly large voice. She’s in top form, the voice as rich and emotional as ever; a few weeks ago she created a sensation at the UK’s Glastonbury music festival, on the same bill as current groups the Arctic Monkeys, The Killers and Editor.

TOWARDS the end of last month, La Bassey released her new album This is My Life. It contains her new hit Get the Party Started, a cover of the track by singer Pink. The CD rocketed to number six on the British charts as soon as it was released ...
