Blackouts affect Telikom service

TELIKOM PNG has advised users that constantly redialing an engaged number would only contribute to an already-congested network that usually occurs during a prolonged blackout.
Acting chief executive officer Peter Loko said if too many people tried to get connected, it could overload the telephone exchange and cause “another dropout of services”.
“Our technicians and engineers got the services up and running again, and customers, probably out of frustration at power cuts, try again and again to get a connection.
“This in itself can overload the exchange, and cause another dropout of services,” he said to explain the disrupted services yesterday.
Mobile phone services were also affected as Telikom lost a large number of their mobile base stations due to the power supply disruptions.
Early yesterday, Telikom electricians switched on the generators, causing some dropout in services, which were restored about two hours later.
“It helps if our customers can show some patience, and also if they can call us to report any systems or services which remain inoperative, after services are restored.”
He said customers could call 323-5555 to report any service breakdown.
