PNG POWER workers at the Yonki hydropower station in Eastern Highlands
have opted not to take strike action as their colleagues in Port
Moresby.
This is because the option to pull the plug on the main power supply at
Yonki would mean ‘a terrible disaster’ for the Morobe, Madang and
Highlands region.
A senior employee at the Yonki hydropower station manager’s office said
yesterday afternoon said that although they were giving their moral
support to their colleagues at Rouna power stations, they would not go
to the extent of shutting off the power supply.
Meanwhile, power disruptions in Lae city has led to the Momase police
chief Giossi Labi threatening to have the regional PNG Power manager in
Lae and the manager of the Yonki hydropower station arrested and charged
for interfering or disrupting the election process.
Mr Labi reportedly called on the PNG Power workers and unions supporting
the actions to disrupt power supplies throughout the country over
outstanding allowances, to seriously consider the rights of the majority
of the people to elect their leaders.
Mr Labi urged the workers and the unions to allow the election process
to be completed then they can push for their claims.
PNG Power in Lae said the power disruption in Lae on Tuesday was caused
by an insulation break-down to a tower near Rumion in the Markham
valley.
Workers had attended to the problem and power was restored.
