PNG Party candidates are early
leaders in three different electorate as counting gets underway
throughout the country.
Party peader Sir Mekere Morauta is leading comfortably in his Moresby
Northwest Open electorate with 7,078 votes, followed Dickson Soto Micka
with 2,156, Miria Ikupu with 1,676 and Russel Wavik running fourth with
1,130 after count 28 at PNG Investment Promotion Authority Hall.
PNG Party and Moresby Northeast candidate David Kaupa is also leading
the Moresby Northeast Open with 2,880 votes.
Another PNG Party candidate is businessman Francis Awesa, who is leading
the count for the Imbonggu Open in Southern Highlands province with
4,642 votes.
Another PNG Party candidate is Roy Yaki, who is running second to
Opposition leader Peter O’Neill in Ialibu-Pangia Open in the first
preference count.
Meanwhile, Sir Mekere was concerned about reports he received about
three counting officials being in the company of associates of a
Regional candidate.
Sir Mekere and his election manager David Wambi had appealed to the
Electoral Commission to investigate the conduct of these officials and
take appropriate action.
“Please … let’s not allow a handful of people to undermine the integrity
of the election and to sabotage people’s right to a fair and honest
election,” Sir Mekere said.
In the Moresby South Open, sitting MP Dame Carol Kidu is still ahead of
Pangu candidate Justin Tkatchenko and PNG Conservative Party candidate
George Lavari.
After count 31, Dame Carol had collected 5,067 votes, Tkatchenko with
3,439 votes and George Lavari with 2,382 votes.
