MP slapped with gun, ammo, drug charges

By JAMES APA GUMUNO
A MEMBER of Parliament was arrested and locked up after a firearm, ammunitions and marijuana were found in his vehicle.
Sitting Member for Kerowagi Open Alphonse Willie was arrested and charged with being in possession of a firearm, ammunitions and marijuana by Mt Hagen police on Tuesday night.
Provincial police commander Chief Supt Wini Henao said yesterday, Mr Willie was arrested on Tuesday night at 8pm at a police roadblock.
Mr Henao said the MP was slapped with four charges under the Summary Offences Act for the firearm, ammunitions and the drug that were found in his vehicle.
He said that the MP was locked up in the police cell and slept one night before being released on Wednesday morning on court bail.
He appeared before District Court magistrate Edward Deib, who released him on a K400 bail.
Court officials said Mr Deib took into account the fact that Willie was a sitting MP defending his seat.
Apart from the cash bail, Willie is to report to the office in charge of police prosecution in Mt Hagen every second Monday until his case on Aug 1.
