Public urged to give blood

By LUCY KAPI

THE St John Blood Service is appealing to the public to donate blood for the Operation Open Heart programme which begins at the Port Moresby General Hospital next month.
Second sister-in-charge of the mobile blood team Baulele Vari said the hospital normally required up to 700ml of blood a month but with the programme, more would be needed.
She made the appeal during the service’s annual visit to The National’s office yesterday.
She said she was pleased with the response of the staff, who donated 32 bags of blood compared to the average of 20 collected in the past.
She thanked The National and its staff for their continuous support.
The mobile blood team travels to schools, educational institutions, organisations and companies every three months.
“So far, the response has been positive,” Sr Vari said.
They will be at the University of PNG for three days from Tuesday.
Sr Vari appealed to those living there to step forward and donate for the heart operation programme.
She said volunteers could also go to the hospital’s blood bank which was opened from 8am to 4pm on weekdays.
