Weekend of mixed results in SP Cup
clashes see new competition leader
By HENRY MORABANG
THERE has been a major reshuffle on the SP Cup competition points
ladder after a weekend of stunning and upset wins.
At the Kagamuga Showground Oval in Mount Hagen, Western Highlands
province, host Besta Eagles upset competition leaders Bintangor
Lahanis 13-12 in front of the capacity crowd.
This was the Eaglesí major second win over their opponent and has
elevated them off the bottom of the ladder.
Lahanis, who were heavily fined by National Judiciary Committee,
also losses their two points and are now fourth on the ladder.
Agmark Gurias find themselves on top of the ladder after a
stunning 42-20 win over early competition pacesetters Wari Vele
Raiders at Kalabond Oval, Kokopo in East New Britain province.
Gurias are now on 20 points, followed by rivals Mabey & Johnson
Muruks and Bulldogs who are on 19 point a piece. (see separate
report inside)
The Gurias have finally found their winning combination and with
four more games to go, they are strong contenders to for grand
final.
Muruks, who also have the same problem with Gurias, have also
found their form and are set for the big showdown.
Muruks stamped their mark at the weekend when they hammered Pagini
Warriors 46-12 in Lae. Bulldogs were on bye.
LBC Bombers recorded their second consecutive win at home and
should find their spot when finals come around. The LBC-sponsored
team bombed visiting Toyota Mioks 32-12 in the first of the
double-header hosted by Lae Rugby League .
Mioks are still coming to terms with heavy fines placed on seven
of their members for an airport incident in Kokopo last Monday
which Ela Motors, the franchise owner of the Enga Mioks,
condemned, saying that it was a “totally unacceptable” behaviour
of some of the members of the rugby league team in Rabaul on
Monday.
The competition ladder as of last weekend: Guria 20, Muruks 19,
Bulldogs 19, Lahanis 18, Raiders 16. Bombers 13, Mioks 12, Eagles
11 and Warriors 7.
