Gurias too powerful for Eagles

By SENT TIMBI
Rabaul Agmark Gurias maintained their SP Cup lead by beating Besta Hagen Eagles 22-8 yesterday at Kagamuga rugby league oval.
The visitors proved too strong for the host team, boasting experienced players Lucas Solbat, Ricky Sibia, Menzie Yere and Opisa Pomba, Rodney Pora and George Becker.
The Gurias were first to register points through a converted try by fullback Sibia in the 20th minute to lead 6-0. Then they added two more points through a penalty kick but Eagles fought back when replacement Steven Neng scored but the try was not converted for an 8-4 scoreline at half-time.
In the second half, Gurias winger Collin Arunga broke through the Eagles defence for a try out wide which was converted by half-back Jessy Alunga and they led 14-4.
Again the Eagles replied with a try from five-eighth Dion Aiye but the conversion was unsuccessful and they trailed 8-12.
Gurias retaliated in the 28th minute when outside centre Rolly Matalau crossed the Eagles try line but the try was unconverted and the scoreline stood at 16-6.
The Eagles had the home crowd cheering all day but to no avail as the visiting team prove too strong when winger Aruna crossed over his second try of the day to seal the game 22-8 when Goroka referee Peter Starky blew the whistle for full-time.
More than 500 people passed through the gate to watch the game which, according to games officials, was the biggest crowd at Kagamuga this season.
