Happy to realise a vision

I REFER to the article ‘Public officers attain Masters in Singapore’ (The National, July 18) regarding the graduation of two officers from the Department of National Planning and Monitoring – Igo Gari and William Sent.
As the first PNG graduate of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in the National University of Singapore (2002-2003), I would like to congratulate the two promising officers.
The article was very articulate and accurate but failed to state how the MoU was secured to pave the way for Papua New Guineans to attend that school as an alternate to attending schools in traditional countries.
I am happy to say that I was responsible for that breakthrough into one of the most advanced economies of the world.
I saw the need for PNG to diversify its human resource training especially, the training of public officials and proposed the initiative and with the foresight of Secretary Valentine Kambori and support of Jacob Mera, former first assistant secretary of finance and administration division of the Department of National Planning, we secured the MoU after three years.
PNG citizens can now attend the National University of Singapore, which is ranked 18th out of the world’s top 25 universities.
The expansion of the initiative includes Simbu provincial government securing agreement with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and two secondary teachers were to have commenced the Masters programme this month and the Department of Education is in the process of finalising the MoU.
I am happy what I envisioned in 2002 during my studies in Singapore has become a reality.

Joe Wemin,
Pioneer PNG graduate of LKY School
