Ipatas grabs third term but his party is bashed in Enga

By PETER PIA in Wabag

ENGAN Governor Peter Ipatas has won a third term in Parliament but his People’s Party has fared poorly in the province.
Mr Ipatas polled 116,652 votes (67%) to comfortably hold off Independent candidate Paul Paken with 59,890, followed by National Alliance man Michael Yai Pupu with 30,087.
But sitting MPs and People’s Party candidates Kappa Yarka (Lagaip/Porgera) and Dickson Maki (Kompiam/Ambum) lost their seats.
Mr Yarka lost to NA’s Philip Kikala while Mr Maki lost to former speaker John Pundari.
Upon Mr Ipatas’ proclamation, Wabag town came alive with celebrations with truckloads of supporters singing and dancing.
Mr Ipatas thanked election officials, security personnel and his supporters for the peaceful election.
He said although none of his endorsed candidates won a seat in Enga, he said his party would still be a major player in the formation of a new Government.
For Lagaip/Porgera, Mr Kikala polled 19,630 votes to oust Mr Yarka who polled 14,050.
Both Messrs Ipatas and Kikala were proclaimed winners at 10am and 4pm respectively last Saturday in front of election officials, security forces and supporters.
