PPP set to take sweeping measures

By HENZY YAKHAM

THE People’s Progress Party (PPP) will move swiftly and decisively to deal with Papua New Guinea’s growing gun-culture, illicit drug trade, outlaw casinos and gradually phase-out poker machines over time, the party’s founding leader Sir Julius Chan said last weekend.
Among the PPP’s sweeping measures, Sir Julius proposes legislative changes for mandatory 10-year prison terms for illegal gun and drug dealers while a ban is strictly enforced with no new licences issued for firearms.
Sir Julius said if PPP was in government, it would support a total ban on introduction of casinos in any form to PNG while starting a gradual phase-out of poker machines over a period of time.
“On guns, there will be a ban on new licences while embarking on firm and practical ways to dealing with illegal guns,” he said.
Sir Julius rated lowly the current National Alliance government describing it as a “very controversial government” which had lost trend of the decision making process succumbing minority pressures and breaking the laws of this country.
“This includes the inquiry into the Finance Department and the highly publicised Defence Force Inquiry into the Moti clandestine escape.”
