OUTGOING Health Minister Sir Peter Barter has assured doctors of the Port Moresby General Hospital and Lae’s Angau Memorial Hospital that the long awaited cancer cobalt machine is soon to arrive in the country.
Sir Peter made the announcement last Saturday night during a fundraising dinner organised by the PNG Women’s Doctors Association to raise funds to purchase medical equipment for the Accident and Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
The much needed cobalt machine will replace the radio therapy machine that is used to treat cancer patients.
Sir Peter said reports in PNG indicate that the number of people diagnosed with cancer was increasing and prevention was better than cure.
The Government has spent K5 million to purchase the cobalt machine that will come from Canada.
“PNG needs a total approach to cancer. We need a radiotherapy staff and to work with people to change their way of life,” Sir Peter added.
The minister also announced that medical equipment would also be purchased for major referral hospitals in the country.
He said doctors and nurses must be equipped with machines to treat patients with severe conditions, and many hospitals did not have such machines.
He applauded the efforts by the women doctors to improve the Accident and Emergency Department at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
