GOVERNOR-General Sir Paulias Matane wants the new government to appoint heads of
departments based on individual merits rather than putting their cronies in
places of leadership.
Sir Paulias said he would undertake the task of asking that the new government
stop the habit of appointing cronies to boards of important State-owned entities
but instead appoint individuals on merit.
He said this during the 2007 Fellowship Awards dinner of the PNG Institute of
Directors (PNGID) last Thursday at Crowne Plaza, Port Moresby, where he was also
accorded the award of honorary fellow to the institute.
The occasion was the second of its kind since the inception of the PNGID, the
first being the inauguration dinner at the Parliament House in March 2000.
President of PNG institute of directors Ian Tarutia said the purpose of this
significant event was to reflect on the role of the institute in promoting
governance and ethical practice in PNG by providing professional leadership that
were anti-corruption.
Sir Paulias said at this time, PNG needed more professionals that would add
value to their organisations so that the public could benefit from their wisdom
in the course of making important decisions for their organisations.
He said the issues of good governance, accountability and transparency had
become synonymous with world’s best practice and, as PNG was now a part of the
global village, “we as a nation must think globally and act locally”.
He commended the efforts of the private sector whose members strive to raise the
benchmark of corporate governance.
