Extra cops deployed in East New Britain

SOME Port Moresby-based police officers were flown into East New Britain province yesterday reportedly to beef up manpower on the ground.
This was confirmed by Police Commissioner Gari Baki yesterday, adding this was because the province had been stretched in providing most of its officers for the election operations and so it needed the additional manpower.
The National was able to talk to several police officers in Kokopo who confirmed the presence of the NCD-based officers but said they did not know why the officers had been brought to the province.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one officer said they were informed that extra police officers were to be flown into Kokopo.
Niugini Islands regional commander Assistant Police Commissioner Fred Sheekiot when contacted, said he was not aware of any deployment and if there were such, then Mr Baki would comment accordingly.
Mr Baki also brushed aside suggestions that the officers were sent to provide security for the National Alliance camp in Kokopo.
“If the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare asks for police officers to provide security for him, this will be done because he is the PM,” Mr Baki said, maintaining no security was being provided for the NA camp.
