Telikom grab top spot in women’s league

By HENRY MORABANG
TELIKOM has grabbed the minor premiership title in Port Moresby soccer after topping the womenís premier competition ladder.
Their win also consolidated their position as the front runner for the 2007 women premiership race as Port Moresby top four was decided after the completion of season proper over the weekend.

The other teams include Rapatona, University and Guria who completed the top four.
The early competition pace setter Rapatona were relegated to second spot with 36 points despite their 1-1 draw match against Guria on Sunday.
University, despite their upset loss to Lamana, are still in the race with 34 points while newcomers Guria complete the top four placing with 29 points.
Port Moresby Soccer Association secretary Frank Kauri confirmed yesterday that the final four was announced over the weekend.
Kauyri said that the team would go for a two-weeks recess to wait until the menís premier team completed their season. The finals will start around the end of August.
Telikom, under national womenís coach Francis Moiyap, want to win the title for their supporters and played their guts out at the weekend.
With the inclusion of Moeder who often adds stinging power upfront was an added bonus for skipper Julie Alau and the company.
PNG Gardener had a couple of scoring chances but could not convert them into points, but should certainly come stronger next season.
Markham Yarangs collected three easy points on forfeit after Naniu failed to field a team on Saturday. Yarangs will need to recruit some experienced players from other clubs to stay competitive in the competition.
On Sunday, Guria were on their way to cause another major upset when Delilah Wave scored in the 44th minute of the game but Polune Kalal of Rapatona thought otherwise when she scored in the 55th minute to level the score.
Lamana scored through Natasah Isarua to ensure University must think twice and reassesse themselves before the finals in two weeks time.
Telikom leads with 40 points, Rapatona 36, University 34, Guria 29, Lamana 26, PNG Gardener 21, Markham Yarang 12 and Naniu 7.
