MEDICAL staff at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the emergency ward of
the Port Moresby General Hospital, that quiet so often, has been
reported as having shortage of beds due to growing number of patients,
smiled in relief yesterday as Medevac Pacific Services wheeled in 20
hospital beds complete with mattresses all in the name of giving.
To the hardworking staff of the two wards, the gesture comes as a “real
blessing” and a relief to pressures of dealing with patients sleeping on
the floor due to shortage of hospital beds.
“The hospital is always in need of beds and has been facing shortages
for a long time so we see such a donation as a great help to the
hospital,” Port Moresby General Hospital Medical Services director Dr
Simon Mete said.
He added that the presentation of the additional 20 hospital beds was
timely as it would help provide better care for patients as well as
taking the pressure off from hospital staff.
“With the growing number of population and the limited number of staff,
our job has become very difficult. Without such kind gestures, it would
be impossible for us to help,” Dr Mete said.
The beds were shipped in from Australia and donated by Medevac Pacific
Services Limited (MPSL) in partnership with the Anodyne Services
Australia.
“The donation confirms our position of commitment and participation to
supporting PNG health in the future,” MPSL director Brian Chin said.
Mr Chin thanked the Anodyne Services Australia and others involved
including Boroko Rotary, Nings Agencies and Queensland Health.
He said that it took almost a year to procure the beds and ship them to
Port Moresby.
Mr Chin placed the replacement costs for the hospital beds to be about
K1.2 million.
