WNB lighthouse loses solar panel

By ELIZABETH VUVU
A SOLAR panel worth about K70,000 that powers the lighthouse, which provides light for incoming ships, on Kimbe Island in West New Britain province has been stolen.
It is alleged that people from the Hoskins and Bulu clan groups, who have been involved in a dispute over land where the lighthouse is situated, may have taken the solar panel.
West New Britain disaster director Lt Col Peter Baki said according to reports, the suspects, who stole the solar panel, did not do it secretly but in broad daylight and this might have been to attract the attention of the authorities.
He said last week the National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) from Port Moresby sent over its investigator ex-policeman Joe Awosa to the area to investigate the damage and theft of the asset.
He left yesterday for Port Moresby.
A mediation team from NMSA is expected to travel to Kimbe before the week ends to conduct mediation between the two clans.
NMSA is reportedly at the forefront in dealing with this issue.
Lt Col Baki said luckily ships that called into Kimbe came during daytime and not at nighttime, when problems could have occurred without lights.
