Lae voters urge Wenge to push for
better housing allowance
By PETER MIVA
TEACHERS in the Morobe province have urged the re-elected Governor
for Morobe Luther Wenge to fulfill his promises to fight for their
rights for better housing conditions in parliament.
An outspoken senior female teacher from Bubia primary school
Decnayam Popal told The National that all eyes were now on Mr
Wenge to present their petition to the floor of parliament.
Teachers went on a strike over a K7 fortnightly housing allowance
early last year for a better housing deal.
“We want to remind Mr Wenge that we are waiting for him to present
our petition over the housing allowance issue when parliament
resumes in due time,” Mrs Popal said.
“We were anxiously waiting for the general election result of Mr
Wenge and now that he has won back his seat, we are renewing our
call for the matter to be sorted out immediately and teachers want
a response after the first sitting of a new government in
parliament.
“We want to remind Mr Wenge that he still has some unfinished
business with the teachers in Morobe and we reiterate our calls
for him to consider this agenda first before any other issues he
pursue.
She said that all teachers, whether they voted for him or not,
have now put their plight on his shoulders as their duly
elected-MP in parliament and put their renewed confidence in him
to fight for their rights.
Mrs Popal said Mr Wenge should be talking about what he would do
regarding the teachers’ housing allowance issues and many other
issues for Morobe province instead of wasting his time on
emotional remarks and personal verbal attacks on his election
rivals.
