| Sali to contest for Lord Mayor |
|
By PETER KORUGL VETERAN Morobe politician Boyamo Sali is contesting the Lord Mayor post in the coming Local Level Government (LLG) election. Mr Sali made his intention known last week at a function hosted by the Lae Urban LLG to farewell the current councillors. Mr Sali openly challenged the current Lord Mayor James Khay saying he would be one of the candidates vying for the post he had lost two years ago to Mr Khay. Mr Khay ousted Mr Sali as Lord Mayor in a vote of no-confidence. The former MP and councillor said he would try and win the top political post in the city back. Mr Sali was one of many intending candidates who were already campaigning in the city for the Lord Mayor’s post. The LLG election was initially planned for November this year but the Electoral Commission deferred it to next year. Meanwhile, Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen said the K30 million allocated for the LLG election were used up in the national election. “I’ve already prepared a submission to be taken up by the new government yet to form to defer the elections to next year, about nine to 12 months from now,” Mr Trawen said. The LLG election was expected to be a fiery affair as the some of the candidates were already planning to print posters and stage elaborate campaigns just like in the national election. |
