Cannery workers laid off due to repair works

By JASON SOM KAUT
WORKERS at RD Tuna cannery in Madang have been laid off while maintenance work is carried out on its facilities to ensure production efficiency.
The RD cannery had neither been closed nor was it ordered to shut by the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) for alleged breach of health standards as reported last Monday in Post-Courier.
Reports from Madang confirmed RD Tuna cannery was not closed but was only undergoing maintenance work.
This was a normal procedure that usually took about two weeks or so to carry out to ensure production efficiency was maintained. It is understood skeleton staff were manning the operations.
NFA managing director Sylvester Pokajam said on Tuesday NFA did not order the cannery to close and described the media report as “irresponsible journalism”.
A source at RD Tuna said NFA had visited the factory as part of their regular audit and inspection checks but did not order any closure.
Mr Pokajam said NFA carries out regular audits from time to time to ensure the country’s fisheries exports meet fisheries standards both nationally and internationally.
