Parkop: Time we let Grand Chief Sir Michael retire

By JULIA DAIA BORE
THE governor-elect of the National Capital District (NCD) Powes Parkop has called on Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare to step aside and let younger leaders take up the reins of the National Alliance and also to lead PNG into the future.
He said Kandep MP Don Polye, Madang governor-elect and former chief justice Sir Arnold Amet and Abau MP Dr Puka Temu were all capable of becoming prime minister.
If any of these three was nominated by the National Alliance to be prime minister in Parliament on Monday, he said he would happily vote for the party.
Mr Parkop said Sir Michael had served the country with distinction, as the first prime minister and in the past five years.
“However, it is time he stood aside for others to take this nation forward,” he told The National.
“If Sir Michael can muster 55 members to support him as prime minister then, fine, but if he does not, he must step aside and allow younger leaders to carry PNG forward into the future.
“He must step aside gracefully and with dignity and allow this to happen.”
He said Sir Michael had done his time for the country and the people must allow him to retire and relax.
“Let others do their part. The country needs to move on and forward. The country cannot continue to hold onto Sir Michael,” Mr Parkop said.
“He helped PNG gain independence. It is part of our history and that can never be taken away from him.”
