Parkop : Allow freedom of expression

NATIONAL Capital District governor-elect Powes Parkop has called on the authorities to allow Papua New Guineans their democratic right to express their opinions over the formation of the new government.
At the same time, he urged the people intending to hold a protest march to Parliament house on Monday to do so peacefully and without violence.
He said if the people wanted to protest or express their opinions, they should be allowed to do so.
“But I appeal to them to stage their democratic freedom of expression in exercising their democratic rights, in total peace and without violence,” he said yesterday.
Failing which, he said, was only fair for the police to exercise their mandated powers to control illegal acts of violence.
Mr Parkop admitted that some non-governmental organisations had approached him but he refused to get involved.
“I told them to do whatever they wanted to do, within the laws and without any violence. They have assured me of that,” he told The National.
“The bottom line is that the people have the right to influence the formation of the government of the day.”
