HIV cases in EHP reach 5,000

REPORTED cases of HIV/AIDs in Eastern Highlands province have grown to 5,000.
Eastern Highlands provincial administrator Munare Uyassi and chairman of the provincial AIDS committee (PAC) Dr Thomas Koimbu revealed this in Goroka yesterday during a presentation of four new vehicles to the three provincial divisions.
Dr Koimbu said the HIV/ADS cases in the province had already reached 5,000.
PAC was allocated one of the three new Toyota Land Cruiser 10-seaters which replaced an old Toyota Hilux.
Mr Uyassi said Eastern Highlands’ provincial administration budgetary allocation toward PAC had been increased from K10,000 to K25,000 this year.
“This demonstrated a commitment to fight HIV/AIDS which had already become a developmental issue,” he said.
The vehicle donation came at the time when volunteer Caroline Ninnes from the Australian Volunteer International had signed a contract to help the province’s AIDS committee.
