East Sepik records 10 new AIDS cases

By GABRIEL FITO
EAST Sepik province has recorded at least 10 new HIV/AIDS cases in the last 12 months, figures released by the local provincial AIDS council has revealed.
The statistics for the month of June 2006 to May this year showed that of the 2,409 people that went for counselling, 389 of them who were troubled with the uncertainty of whether or not they had contracted the virus, voluntarily opted for testing.
Paula Paime, head of voluntary counselling and testing department, said three consecutive tests conducted over a nine months period have yielded 10 new cases for East Sepik over the last 12 months.
East Sepik provincial AIDS co-ordinator Emil Trowale said it could only be “a tip of an iceberg”, as more people had not come for counselling and testing due to fear of being ostracised.
