Police boss fights off attackers

POLICE Commissioner Gari Baki was attacked by five armed men while jogging near his home in Waigani early yesterday morning.
The men, who were armed with knives, iron bars and a homemade gun, confronted him near the Waigani fire station at about 6am, unaware of who he was.
They demanded his mobile phone and when he refused, one of them swung a knife at him.
Mr Baki managed to fend off the attack and knocked the man down.
The other men then rushed at him, causing him to fall.
But he quickly got up and continued to defend himself.
The men finally fled in the direction of Morata, leaving behind the homemade gun.
Mr Baki related the incident at a press conference at the police headquarters in Konebodu.
His right wrist and left forearm were bandaged.
“I have instructed the city police to go on patrol in the early hours to protect people who usually take a morning walk to keep fit,” he said.
“If they can attack me, then anyone regardless of their status in the society, is vulnerable to the criminals.”
Mr Baki said the attack would not discourage him from his usual daily morning walks.
