Homeless settlers receive aid

THE West New Britain disaster office is working jointly with Caritas PNG to donate tents and cooking utensils to families at the Siki Oil Palm settlement in Hoskins, who were left homeless following a recent election related rampage.
Caritas PNG donated the utentils while the disaster officer provided the tents.
Director, Lt Col Peter Baki said the families’ houses were burnt down allegedly by supporters of a losing candidate, who contested the regional seat.
He said permanent houses belonging to the Tolais of East New Britain and Bali Islanders of West New Britain were targeted by the supporters two weeks ago.
Personal properties, food crops and livestock were also destroyed following the declaration.
The Red Cross branch in WNB has also offered its support.
Meanwhile, police are still investigating the incident.
