Baki commends people for peaceful polls

POLICE Commissioner Gari Baki said yesterday the people of PNG should be proud that the general election was generally peaceful despite earlier claims that there would be widespread violence.
“The elections were a success because the majority of our people exercised their democratic right to choose their leader freely, fairly under generally peaceful conditions despite numerous predictions of widespread violence from prophets of doom and gloom, outside interests and irresponsible and uncaring Papua New Guineans,” he said.
He thanked the people for assisting the security forces to maintain law and order.
“The people should all be proud. They have proved the critics wrong. They have shown everyone that democracy and rule of law is alive and well in PNG.”
Mr Baki also congratulated members of the security forces who “worked tirelessly and selflessly to ensure that our people were given the opportunity to freely and without undue influence vote for their leaders”.
He said a platoon of soldiers would be pulled out of Western Highlands tomorrow even though there was some trouble in the province.
“It is too costly to have them up there after the elections. It is now up to the provincial leaders to contain the situation,” he said in a statement.
“It is a law and order problem. Security force members have gone in and cleared the roadblocks with the help of leaders there in the Nebilyer Valley.”
