Rai Coast people find it hard to accept Yali’s election

By PETER KORUGL
RAI Coast people in Madang province highly respected their women and are finding it hard to accept that a convicted rapist was elected to Parliament, a community leader has said.
Keppa Jangiko, who claimed to be the spokesman for the Dumuna Akiki clan, yesterday said it was regrettable that a convicted rapist like James Yali was elected but the blame must lay with the Electoral Commission and the district administrator.
“We are very sorry and apologise for that, please do not regard all Rai Coast people as insane, who do not know the difference between wrong and right,” Mr Jangiko said.
He said the majority of the people in the electorate were amazed and wondered how a person behind bars could be allowed to nominate in another electorate and be elected.
Mr Jangiko said apart from the Electoral Commission, the district administrator allowed an unauthorised and unlocked ballot box (number 22) and forced it to be included in the counting when the second runner-up was leading.
