Decentralisation laws need to be reviewed, says PM

By ELIZABETH VUVU
THERE is a need to revive decentralisation laws in Papua New Guinea in order to give power back to provinces, as currently all powers are centralised at Waigani.
Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare said this during the farewell dinner for the National Alliance camp members at Club Mill Warangoi last Friday night.
He said it was high time to begin focusing on developments of all districts, which would mean bringing back decisions to be made at the district levels.
He said currently decisions concerning districts and local level governments made at the national level took some time and district projects were placed on hold, and this in turn slowed down district developments.
Sir Michael said before decentralisation laws were abolished in 1995, everything worked well.
He challenged the possible 80 MPs comprising of National Alliance members that came together in Kokopo to unite with 13 political parties to work together to change the direction of how the country would be run for the next 30 years.
He said this newly merged faction comprised of 18 governors who would have the power to have a say in autonomy in their respective provinces.
He urged all elected members to make people’s welfare their number one priority. This included improvements in education, health and infrastructure.
