Convicted rapist out on three-year probation

By PETER MIVA
A YOUNG man, who raped his 10-year-old niece, was sentenced last Thursday by the National Court in Lae to six years in jail but the six-year term was wholly suspended and he is to serve only three years on probation.
National Court judge Justice George Manuhu sentenced Tiga Yapi, in his 20s, from Sipaia village, Lae, Morobe province, to six years, four months and one week but deducted the four months and one week he had spent while in custody.
Justice Manuhu further suspended the six-year remainder of the term and placed the prisoner on a three-year probation term with strict conditions that he pays K500 compensation within one month to the victim.
He further ordered the prisoner not to consume alcohol during the probation period, and that he must not associate with drinkers.
Justice Manuhu also appointed a councillor, Sandy Karo, who is from Sipaia village, as a volunteer probation officer to supervise the prisoner.
Justice Manuhu made his ruling after carefully considering means assessment and pre-sentence reports from the Community-Based Corrections office.
