Central regional election challenged

TWELVE losing candidates for the Central provincial Regional seat have signed a petition to take to the Court of Disputed Returns over the way the election was conducted in the Goilala Open electorate.
The candidates include Philomena Kassman, Monica Aitsi, Tau Po’o, John Orea, Dr Mari Apana, Allan Kekele, Jack Talai, Manu Genomalu, Miria Ume, Roger Digga, Voro Vele and Sir Charles Maino.
They claimed that there were serious allegations of vote buying, bribery, corruption, undue influences, writing out ballot papers by the presiding officer and serious discrepancies during the polling and counting.
“The presiding officer who admitted to writing out the ballot papers for the voters during polling in the Goilala Open electorate should be arrested and charged by police for forging and altering ballot papers.”
They concluded that in the interest of fair election and the people of Central province, they will collectively assist in the preparation of the case to be filed in the Court of Disputed Returns and push for a by-election.
A working committee was set up under the chairmanship of Sir Charles to look into all the allegations and prepare necessary documents, then engage a law firm to file the petition in court.
