AN overwhelming turn-out of participants
from various organisations at a breakfast meeting last week for
Leadership Papua New Guinea (LPNG) proved a huge demand for young
professional leaders in the country.
The breakfast meeting hosted by the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and
Industry (POMCCI) was attended by various corporate, private and public
sector heads that were keen to learn of LPNG programmes in moulding good
leaders.
Chairperson of Emerging Pacific Leaders Dialogue (EPLD) Lady Mina
Siaguru pointed out that the creation of LPNG came after participants in
an ELPD conference in 2006 became unhappy with the negatives comments
about PNG made in a public forum overseas.
She noted that it was through these 15 participants that became an
entity of its own last February with an ultimate goal to significantly
contribute to the development of PNG.
The purpose of the breakfast meeting was to lure in financial and
corporate support for LPNG, with theme Papua New Guinea is only as good
as the leaders in it.
LPNG programme consultant George Bopi ,in presenting an overview of the
movement, highlighted that it with LPNG, one of the primary focus was to
provide a common definition of “leader” or “leadership”.
He said currently the term is defined differently in the various levels
of society.
“We recognise that leadership is a key factor in producing healthy,
productive, and effective families and communities,” Mr Bopi said.
He added that often, leaders did not know the problems and assure them a
core value of LPNG to nurture leaders and leadership that was based on,
and aligns with, correct principles.
LPNG had received 45 applications for the this year’s programme that had
already been set into motion.
Of these 45 applicants, 16 would be selected to participate in the
month- long programme with four others who are on the reserve list.
