Over 200 to undergo surgery on USS Peleliu

MORE than 200 patients have been screened for ophthalmologic surgeries by the visiting Pacific Partnership team members aboard USS Peleliu currently in Madang province.
The screening took place during the last few days and yesterday at the Modilon General Hospital before patients were transported to the USS Peleliu last Saturday to be operated on.
More patients will be undergoing operation on the ship until it departs on Friday.
The patients are benefiting from the Pacific Partnership programme of the members of US navy and professional and non-governmental organisation from other nationalities aboard the USS Peleliu.
The Madang leg of the Pacific-wide humanitarian work includes a medical civil-assistance programme and community relations project, where Modilon General Hospital, selected rural health centres and communities are being provided assistance.
Members of the team have also gone to Bunabun Health Centre, Josephstaal and on Karkar Island to assist the communities.
They also cleaned up and refurbished the fish market inside the Madang town market and painted and spruced a dormitory and shower block at the Madang Technical College.
“I think what we are doing here is good for our relationship between the US and Papua New Guinea,” Commander Shari Jones, one of Pacific Partnership’s embarked doctors was quoted as saying on the US navy website.
“The people here are fantastic. They are very pleased and open to whatever we are doing and very grateful for us being here.”
The team will also make donations to Rotary Club and Tusbab Secondary School this week.
US Ambassador to PNG Leslie Rowe will be visiting the USS Peleliu team tomorrow.
