Private sector groups ask govt to
clearly explain NetCo
THE country's private sector
organisations have asked the Government to clearly state how
Telikom will better improve the delivery of telecommunications in
the country under the planned NetCo scheme.
In a paid advertisement last Friday, the groups expressed
reservations over the impact of the proposed information,
communication and technology (ICT) policy if carried out under its
present form.
The advertisement was signed by groups that came from the business
and industry sectors.
Brown Bai, chairman of the Rural Industries Council, said that
while they welcome the new government yesterday, the position of
all private sector organisations was to draw the attention of the
new Government and discuss the telecommunications issue at hand.
The group had also asked the Government has to clearly state how
Telikom (to be called Netco) will better deliver the critical
infrastructure and services to the business community.
Mr Bai said they understand where the Government was coming from
and will continue to work with them.
“We congratulate the new Government and will continue to work
closely with the new government,” Mr Bai said.
Mr Bai said people in the rural areas wanted to see change which
resulted in this formation of the Government.
He said the Government in the past had really supported the
agriculture industry by promoting it, so we look forward to
working with the Government on the agriculture and fisheries
industries.
John Kassman, manager technical on the Daru deep water port
project, PNG Sustainable Development Programme, said with the new
(mobile) service provider, his people could now call him from home
and want to see the day when the same people in the village have
access to internet services at an affordable price.
“I must be honest in saying the Government and its agencies have
failed the very people that paid for the service and voted the
leaders,” Mr Kassman said.
