Sorcery terror allegedly on rise in Mora Kaupa

By ELIZABETH MIAE
THERE is fear among the people of Mora Kaupa village in the Gumine district of Simbu province that the trend of killing allegedly by sorcerers is on the rise.
John Kinibabarter, who hails from the area, claimed that his mother was killed by four youths who accused her of prasticing sorcery.
The alleged incident happened last Tuesday at midnight, where the four youths, who were under the influence of marijuana, broke into his mother’s house, raped her and another young woman before killing the former.
Mr Kinibabarter said they used a bush knife to cut her neck and beat her up with sticks. However the incident was not reported immediately to police as the people feared for their lives.
He said one of the alleged killers was looked after by his mother but later turned to drugs and criminal activities.
Attempts by The National to speak to the provincial police commander were unsuccessful.
Mr Kinibabarter claimed that such acts were done by youths who had turned to drugs and tend to target people who were poor and living alone.
