THE Buimo jail rebuilding project currently funded by AusAID is almost complete
with most of the buildings renovated and built, ready for the official handover.
Jail commander Chief Supt Samson Jaro said that he was pleased with the progress
of the project and that the only building yet to be fully completed was the
100-room dormitory for male convicts.
Mr Jaro told The National that the 100-room male prisoners’ dormitory was
halfway towards completion by contractor Lae Builders and Contractors and is
expected to be fully completed soon.
He said that once the dormitory was completed, the jail would have the capacity
to accommodate more prisoners and would subsequently ease the overcrowding
problem and manpower shortage.
He said the other facilities which had been fully completed were the extension
of the female detainee compound and the upgrading of the juvenile compound which
was completed by Regional Engineering and Construction.
Mr Jaro said the other facilities completed also included the three brand new
minimum security units comprising a mess, kitchen and a resource centre.
He said that the new mess and kitchen facility would help boost the quality and
variety of meals prepared for prisoners.
Mr Jaro said that the resource centre would be used for meetings and other
recreational activities for prisoners and staff members.
He said that an industrial hall was almost completed and once officially opened,
will boost the image of the jail and also assist in its capability to
accommodate prisoners in a healthy environment.
Mr Jaro said the project would be completed before September this year following
a court order in 2003 issued by the National Court to close half of the jail to
upgrade and build new facilities.
