Chan ‘down but not out’

THE unsuccessful nominee for the alternate prime minister Sir Julius Chan said yesterday he will not be Opposition leader and would rather concentrate on being governor of New Ireland province.
Earlier in Parliament after the election of the prime minister, Sir Julius rose to personally congratulate Sir Michael Somare in his successful election as prime minister.
Sir Julius said his relationship with Sir Michael go back as far as pre-independence days and that Sir Michael’s leadership was admirable in that he was able to sit amongst people who had openly campaigned against him.
Sir Julius said he knew deep inside that Sir Michael was a very good man and that he must have his heart in the right place.
He urged Sir Michael to continue to serve the weak and the poor and to protect the minority.
He said depending on the outcome of the court case, his minority group would serve in the Opposition.
Sir Julius told reporters later that the outcome of the Supreme Court reference would still be heard.
“Let the court decide the election of the prime minister. We are down but not out. We must learn to forgive and forget. We must know that politics is not about numbers but about principles,” he said.
He added that between himself, Sir Mekere and Mr Philemon, their experience would make a good Opposition.
