Final four confirmed for Moresby soccer

By HENRY MORABANG
BETTER goal average has propelled village team, Verave, into the top four of the Port Moresby soccer premier competition this season.
Verave, led by Tau Winnie, scored five goals to B-Mobile one at the weekend to become the first Central Village team to play in the finals of the tough premier soccer competition in the country.
Verave, PS Rutz and Defence are all equal on 27 points but Verave outscored them to secure third spot ahead of Defence who settled for the fourth and the cut-off for the premiership race. The other two top finalists are South who claimed minor premiership after disposing Cosmos 3-0 and University who hammered Rapatona 2-0 in an aggressive and physical soccer match.
In other matches, the unpredictable Guria side forced a scoreless draw with top gun Defence, and PS Rutz downed fellow wantok team Momase 2-1. Despite their win, PS Rutz just missed out on the top four which was confirmed during the weekend.
The final points ladder Souths 48, University 41, Verave, 27, Defence 27, PS Rutz 27, Rapatona 26, Cosmos 26, Momase 18, Guria 14 and B-Mobile 6.
PMSA secretary general Frank Kauri confirmed that top four will be eligible for the play-offs while those who missed out will have to wait for another season.
Kauri said there will be no match this weekend to allow for outstanding matches in other divisions to be played. The women’s premier team won’t play their finals until after the SP Cup match as majority of the players in the national team were selected from the finalists.
