Lae League plays catch-up football

By PETER PIA
LAE rugby league will complete all their postponed matches this week before the finals start this weekend., according to executive officer David Atua.
Atua said last game of the final round 9 were not played a week ago because of bad weather and a series SP Cup double header matches in Lae every Sunday.
He said the LRL executives and match officials have met and agreed to bring some of the washed matches to this week.
“For A and B grades, about two or three games were cancelled so we’ll get them out the way during the week days before the finals.
“But I am sure we (LRL) are going with the PNGRFL calendar and we’ll complete all the washed-out games before the knockout finals on August 25-26.
I am very pleased with the club officials for their understanding and the cooperation with us, which is very good.
“So far so good, we are looking forward to peaceful finals,” Atua said, adding that the top five teams would vie in the finals.
He said Lae league has had a wonderful year, trouble-free from spectator violence, and he applauded club officials, players and the fans for their contribution to good sportsmanship.
He said that because of this good co-operation, the PNGNRL and SP Cup board had decided Lae to host double header match successively.
