By WENDY KATUSELE
AN Australian coach has been tasked to take charge of the national women’s rugby team the Ragiannas prepare for this month’s international fixture Singapore Blacks sevens.
Due to national head coach Sailosi Druma heavily committed to the national men’s sevens team to the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, which is the same time as the Singapore event, Women’s Rugby Union have engaged the services of Naomi Roberts to take over the head coach role.
Roberts had been appointed as national assistant coach for WRU but takes over the major role since the engagement of Druma.
The Singapore Blacks sevens will be held on Aug 24-25 while the Pacific Games start with the opening ceremony on Aug 25 with closing on Sept 8.
Roberts, of Fijian parentage but an Australian citizen, brings back a colourful background in rugby union.
Roberts arrives in the country on Friday to officially take up her coaching role with the national team.
She brings a wealth of experience having represented Australian as a player in both the 15s and sevens as either a fullback or a winger since 1994 but took a break from the sport in 2002 for five years but has returned taking up coaching instead.
Roberts has played 13 Tests with the Australian Wallaroos in the 15s and had been a regular member of sevens Wallaroos from 1997 to 2001.
Roberts has been the coach of Northern Territory team to the Darwin sevens in 2007 which our womens team attended.
Roberts also coached the Aussie Rats to the Hong Kong sevens this year as runners up to the Cup final.
The Ragiannas are currently in training in Port Moresby for up coming event.
