Focus on rural areas!
THE overwhelming support for Sir Michael Somare’s leadership is certainly impressive. The onus is now on the Government to consolidate on the recent economical gains but more importantly, re-direct funding and development to the rural areas. The areas that really matter to the people are infrastructure development, rural agriculture development and meaningful health and education reforms. The appointment of Dr Clement Malau is the best thing that has happened to PNG health sector. It is sad though that Health Minister Sir Peter Barter has left political life. Sir Michael must continue to look North to Asia; that’s where the money is for PNG. – Dr Momia Teariki-Tautea, Western Australia

Thank you USS Peleliu
I WOULD like to say a big thank-you to the officers and crew of the visiting USS Peleliu. They have done a wonderful job to spruce up Madang. These sailors have showed us they are not afraid of hard or dirty work. They even cleaned the toilets. On behalf of the students of DWU, especially the Trainee Health Extension #3, we are grateful for the visiting men and women teaching us new things and for taking us around on the helicopter and on board USS Peleliu. They were certainly experiences of a lifetime for us. – Florence Tumbari, Health Extension Year 3, DWU, Madang

Recognised for deterioriation?
EVERY year during special occasions, our leaders are knighted by the Queen of England for their contribution to the development of the country. Interestingly, I have not seen any development but deterioration for the last 20 years. – Lucas Kiap, Lae

Rage over PMVs in POM
THE people who operate PMVs in Port Moresby must have their heads examined. I have seen small schoolchildren being chased off their PMVs because the children do not pay adults’ fare. Besides that, the PMVs don’t even bother to complete their designated routes and thereby cheating the passengers. Then we have some drivers who drive as if they are possessed by the devil. No wonder so many lives are lost. If they want to drive fast, they should at least do it on roadworthy vehicles and not the rundown ones on our roads. – Shaken commuter, Port Moresby

Chan should lead Opp
I BELIEVE Sir Julius Chan should be the Opposition leader. If Sir Mekere Morauta and Bart Philemon have nominated him for the prime minister’s job, then he should be the Opposition leader. – Upisa Ala, US

Unfair statistics on NA
I REFER to “Cheated and betrayed” (Aug 15) by “Frustrated and betrayed”, who claimed that 74.3% of voters voted against the National Alliance. I am sorry that the writer had to undergo a nightmare when NA emerged winner in the end. It is obvious the writer was writing on his/her own interest. The statistic provided was unfair as it compared with one political party against the other parties. Mind you, NA had announced a political marriage with its coalition partners before the election and came out winners with 55.96%. This would have indicated that more than half of the people are happy with the coalition Government. – Nor Pondo, Port Moresby

Communication break through
I AM a Papua New Guinean living in Auckland, New Zealand, and for the first time last week, I was able to receive a phone call from my family staying in the “trouble zone” of Nebilyer. In the past, my family had to travel to Mt Hagen if they wanted to communicate with me. But now, thanks to Digicel, they can now call me from Nebilyer. I am so happy and impressed. Congratulations Digicel, you have reached the unreached. – Komb Kena, Auckland, New Zealand

Tribes should lay down arms
I REFER to “Students flee war at school” (Aug 16). The prestigious Amapyaka Lutheran International School has nothing to do with the warring factions. The warring Ambulin and Wapukin tribes have brought disgrace to Enga province and the whole country by carrying out their fight in the school. Don’t these people know the importance of the school in their midst? It is high time the men put down their weapons and let life return to normal for the good of their women and children who suffer so much and think about the future of their children and society. – Extremely disgusted, Madang
