THIRTY-seven strit vendas (street
vendors) will help distribute Digicel flex cards on streets and settlements in
Port Moresby, Digicel announced on Tuesday.
Strit Vendas PNG is a company purposely set up to give youths the opportunity to
earn a living to enable them to improve their lives and to make a difference in
their community and their country.
“Flex (top-up) cards will be available on every street corner and in every
settlement in Port Moresby, making Digicel service accessible to everyone thanks
to the help of
37 strit vendas,” Digicel spokesperson Marina van der Vlies said in a statement.
The street vendors are youths from Moresby South and the streets of Port Moresby
who have been stigmatised by society, the statement added.
The youths have been training recently to be street vendors by a company named
Fijiana Bure.
This is the first project of its kind in the country and Digicel and the street
vendors were proud
and excited to launch the initiative together.
To begin with, the top-up cards will be available in K3, K5 and K10
denominations.
The street vendors will be recognisable in their red Digicel caps and T-shirts
with the words “Top Up Here!” printed on the front and back, and will be
stationed in different areas throughout Port Moresby, giving everyone easy
access to purchase top-up cards.
Digicel plans to roll out this project nationwide following the initial set up
of operations in Port Moresby over the coming months.
