Danaya urges Government to clamp down on smuggling

THE National Alliance-led Government has been urged to review all legislation governing prohibition of narcotic drugs involving dealers, traffickers and users.
Western Governor Dr Bob Danaya made the call following media reports that Western province had become the hub of drug trafficking and arms smuggling.
Dr Danaya said the Government must seriously look at the possibility of imposing capital punishment on drug dealers if PNG was to resolve the current problem.
“The Government must also look at reviewing the Vagrancy Act to ensure that the movement of people are restricted if they do not have a genuine reason to travel to another province other than their own,” Mr Danaya said.
He added he would be looking at introducing identification system for all employees in his province to stop unnecessary people travelling to and from Western province.
“We would also be seeing appropriate law enforcement agencies at the national and provincial levels to increase border patrols, particularly along the coastline the common borders of Australia and Indonesia and PNG,” he said.
Mr Danaya called on local communities along the coastline and the border regions to help fight the problem by reporting the people involved in drug trafficking and arms smuggling to the appropriate authorities.
