Women soccer fully dressed to
bring back gold
PAPUA New Guinea national women’s
soccer team is leaving for Samoa today for the 2007 Pacific
Games. They received their new national team uniforms at the
Grand Palace yesterday.
Papua New Guinea Football Association executive committee
member, Linda Wonuhali presented the new uniforms to the team at
the Grand Palace Restaurant in Port Moresby.
Wonuhali said while presenting the uniforms that PNG have trust
and belief in successfully defending the gold that they won in
the 2003 South Pacific Games in Fiji.
“It is a challenge for you now and the challenge is you must
fight strong to defend and retain your gold medal,” she said.
“You got to play, for the country ... the nation and think of
PNG when you play,” she said.
Team coach, Francis Moyap said the team was well prepared and
ready to defend the gold medal.
“I call for morale support from the people of PNG and ask you to
believe in the team,” he said. “Almost all the players in the
team have tasted international matches, and the foreign turf in
Samoa will not be new to them,” Moyap said.
He said the good thing about the team was that all the players
could play two positions and would be competitive in Samoa and
play well.
He said the team’s threats were Fiji and Guam, “but we are
confident that we will beat because we have beaten them.” (2-1
and 3-0 respectively in the last SP Games in Fiji).
The team is Roxen Komeng, Linda Bunaga, Miriam Lanta, Caroline
Moeder, Catherine Horris, Helen Baki, Margaret Aka, Julie Alau
(C), Daisy Winas, Lydia
Barnabas, Samantha Peninsa, Cathy Agunam, Tracy Kig, Ara Midi,
Pricilla Konolali, Judith Sauto and Deslyn Siniu with coach
Francis Moyap and team manageress Maggie Taligatus. The squad
leaves the country today (24.08.07) for Samoa.
